7 E-Z Steps to Lower Heating Bills

As a leading home inspection company in Buffalo and all of Western New York, we are frequently asked about controlling heating costs during the coldest months of the year.

Here are seven easy tips to help you really cut your heating costs with very little effort.

  1. Lower your thermostat setting just 3-5 degrees and you can save up to 30% on your monthly heating bill.  For a little extra help, set your water heater to about 120 degrees or the normal setting to help control fuel usage.  By the way, setting hot water temperatures above 120 doesn’t give you more hot water it just gives you hotter water.
  2. Change or clean your furnace filters monthly.
  3. Do not block heat outlets or cold air return registers.
  4. Check and repair broken or separated seams of the heat ducts.
  5. Add insulation at the attic level.
  6. Caulk and apply weatherstrip to doors and windows.
  7. Open drapes in the day to allow the sun to warm the interior and close them at night to keep the warmth in.
